Lapis lazuli, a popular pigment called dragon’s blood, malachite and gold leaf of 23.5 carat are some ingredients that have been used in the paint to re-create Mappa Mundi.
Mappa Munid has 3ftx4ft dimensions and it has been handcrafted on calfskin, and it is, indeed, the first serious effort to create a world map that was quite popular in medieval times.
Mappa Mundi got its inspiration from Sawley Map that was the only existing Mappa Mundi created in 12th century. This English Mappa Mundi has been kept in the library of Corpus Christi College, Cambridge.
English Heritage commissions that map and now its going to be placed in a Dover Castle suite of rooms. The rooms will be refurbished in the same way as they were in the Henry II times in 1180s.
The English Heritage historian Dr. Steven Brindle is behind this re-creation of the Mappa Mundi. There are many other medieval maps that have been found with many different meanings and most of them seem to convey the message of the end of the time and God’s fear.
